It is difficult to tell who is right or wrong.

From a more sociological perspective on power, I guess the camp that says you need resources to fund ideas is right. Of course, it might also be that ideas that are fundamentally good would eventually get funded.

But most people who are trying to get their ideas funded believe their ideas are good. But what if everyone has similar ideas? And the match tends to be much more complicated than that. For one thing, the profiles of the management team matters (Higgins & Gulati, 2003). Also, connections matter (Shane & Cable, 2002). One can also get meta about this – when does a idea get recognized as a good idea? Perhaps this is when the idea is communicated to you by someone who is pal with you (homophily) or someone who is of higher status than you (status-based signaling).

Stumbled across your blog while looking for info. on Appalachia. Interesting post. My daughter is an art major (just accepted into grad school) and has been passionate about art since kindergarten. I envy her that passion.

Regarding relationship/friendship sacrifices being easier for men than women -- stereotypically I would agree with you. However, I am a woman who prefers my alone time and have had few ties to family (other than my children) and am rather better off with limited relationships. I rather enjoy my aloneness.

Anyway, thank you for your thoughts.

Interesting stuff. I sympathize with the notion that post-undergrad's period of less structure can lead to confusion. Luckily, after becoming turned around, I willed myself back abroad to get back on track. The memories of those early days post-undergrad remain with me to this day and provided important lessons on focus and career paths, lessons I'm still learning today.
